Coordinate Geometry Class 10 – Continuing our series for Class 10 Revision for CBSE board exams, we bring you a new chapter today i.e. Coordinate Geometry.
Concepts to be covered in this article are:
- Distance Formula
- Section Formula
- Area of Triangle
Let’s discuss each topic of Coordinate Geometry one-by-one
Distance Formula
This gives the distance between any two points lying in coordinate plane. The distance between ?(?1,?1) and ?(?2,?2) is given by:
((?2−?1)2+(?2−?1)2)^1/2
Even the distance from origin that we calculate as (?2+y2)^1/2 is derived from this formula by taking coordinates of one of the points as (0,0).
The questions that come on distance formula can be simple application based or mixed with concept from other chapters. For example:
Section Formula
The coordinates of any point ? which divides the line segment joining the points ?(?1,?1) and ?(?2,?2) internally in the ratio ?1:?2 is given by Section Formula as:
Mid point formula is a special case of Section formula, where ?1=?2=1 Therefore, mid point of any line segment having (?1,?1) and (?2,?2) as the coordinates of end points of the line segment is given by :
Area of triangle
Area of triangle having vertices (?1,?1),(?2,?2) and (?3,?3) is given by:
In the process of calculating area using this method, if you obtain a negative value, then ignore the minus sign as area can never be negative. Lets look at this questions asked in boards based on this concept:
