Handling Rejection

In our country today, all parents have the traditional dream – one day their child will pass out of the best college of the country – IIT or AIIMS. Often, this dream is very deeply ingrained in the child’s mind from the very day they begin their high school. And what is the result? This creates unnecessary pressure and stress in students.

It’s a good aim to want to study in the best colleges in the field you want to pursue. If you want to pursue engineering or medical field, one of the best ways to prepare is with Avanti Learning Centres as the teachers over here give personal attention to each and every student enrolled in the class. Avanti Learning centres has also released an app for teaching students in places they can’t teach personally, aka, Avanti Gurukul App. The app can help you learn concepts quickly and efficiently. You can test your understanding by taking quizzes which tells you which concepts to focus on based on your answers.

However, times are changing and there isn’t any single, set path that guarantees success. JEE and AIIMS are not the only ways to scale the heights of success in India and abroad. You no longer have to be an engineer or a doctor to be doing good in your life, and even if you want to follow these professions, it doesn’t necessarily have to be from IIT or AIIMS only.

Some students take failing in an exam as ultimate failure in life. Know that it’s not the end of the world. Almost all successful people have faced failure in their lives. Let’s look at a few examples:

  1. Kalpana Chawla – first Indian woman in space failed to crack the JEE, but that did not shatter her dream of going to NASA. She obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, India after which she moved to the United States and obtained two Master of Science degree and a PhD in aerospace engineering.
  2. Pullela Gopichand – Chief National Coach for the Indian Badminton team, could not clear IIT. He then shifted from studies and went on to focus on sports and became world number 1 in badminton. He has coached and guided players like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu to Olympic medal. He has received awards like Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, Padma Bhushan etc for his outstanding work.
  3. Vinod Dham – known as the ‘Father of the Pentium Chip,’ failed at the IIT-JEE exam. He came to the US with just $8 in his pockets. While barely making ends meet, he completed his graduation and found a job for himself at Intel and, the rest, is history.
  4. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan – The Indian-American-British structural biologist who won a Nobel Prize in chemistry failed to clear entrance tests for both the IIT and medical college. He enrolled for B.Sc. course in Physics in Baroda after which he studied abroad and obtained PhD in Physics from Ohio University.
  5. Satya Nadella – current CEO of Microsoft, studied at Manipal Institute of Technology. He later traveled to the U.S. to study for an M.S. in Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and did MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

In today’s dynamic and ever-evolving environment, even though IITs/AIIMS still hold an immense amount of value in one’s career and a degree from these institutions can take you places, but one can get to those same places in many other ways. All you need is passion and dedication towards your work. In this era, the world doesn’t need more IITians or doctors or pilots – it just needs more passionate people doing their job whole-heartedly.

So are you one of the many students who couldn’t make the cut to IIT/ AIIMS or other top colleges? Worry not – there are a host of other opportunities waiting for you! Let’s discuss the most common and promising options for you.

The most obvious choice when you haven’t made the cut for an IIT or AIIMS is to go in for the second-best engineering or medical colleges of the country. You can go apply for NITs for engineering and NEET/ JIPMER for medical. There are a host of colleges that either have other entrance exams or accept JEE scores but have lower cut-off marks than the IITs. Some examples include BITS, VIT, BVP, IIIT, NSIT, Punjab Engg college, IP University, etc. You can even go for state universities or colleges. Most deemed universities are also very adept at imparting a sound technology education. You can later back this training with post graduation, i.e., MS / MBA/ PhD from a good institution in India or abroad and enjoy similar pay-scales as any IIT pass-out. Doing this will also make you learn greater set of skills.

There are a lot of career options opening up other than engineering and MBBS too. Unless you actually want to become and engineer or a doctor, do give these a thought. There are a lot of opportunities that you can explore within Medical and Non Medical Science streams. If you want to read more about these opportunities, click here.

Lastly we would like to tell you that if you think there is a vertical/field that really interests you and you think you can make a career out of that then it makes sense to pursue that instead of following the herd. For instance, if you feel that your interest lies in a field like designing, then don’t be afraid to pursue relevant courses from NIFT, NID or Pearl Academy etc. After receiving the necessary education from a reputed institute, you can do wonders in such creative fields with the right mix of attitude, intelligence, hard-work and of course, passion!

All the best!!
