Hello everyone, the offline examination of JEE Mains was conducted on 8th april at various centres across India, and we hope you all fared well. In this video, we will do an analysis of JEE Mains 2018 paper, and discuss some trends seen in JEE papers over the years. We will primarily look at the topic wise distribution and , the difficulty level and based on all this, we will predict the cut off for this year.
If we talk about the paper, Since JEE Main has started, which was in 2013
- Exam pattern remains the same
- Marking, time, no of questions -same
We will be looking at three different parameters – XI ,XII distribution, Topic wise distribution and Difficulty distribution
Let us have a look at it subject wise
Chemistry
If we look at the chemistry section – we can say that slightly More number questions from XI this time whereas more from 12th usually
Chemistry | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 |
XI | 17 | 17 | 30 |
XII | 13 | 13 | 30 |
Total | 30 | 30 | 30 |
Takeaway: study both XI and XII
Topic wise distribution
Chemistry | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 |
Organic Chemistry | 9 | 11 | 11 | 9 |
Inorganic Chemistry | 10 | 8 | 7 | 12 |
Physical Chemistry | 11 | 11 | 12 | 9 |
Observation: Almost equal weightage of all 3
Takeaway: Do NOT ignore inorganic – very scoring and straightforward marks
Difficulty distribution: Same difficulty as last year. Chemistry was a little tricky as questions were tested your overall understanding of the subject instead of fitting a particular question type.
Not very lengthy. Practical chemistry related questions were asked – salt analysis , titration
Option elimination was possible
Physics | Chemistry | Maths
Easy | 6 | 7 | 6 |
Medium | 16 | 17 | 14 |
Hard | 8 | 6 | 10 |

Physics | Chemistry | Maths
Easy | 9 | 7 | 4 |
Medium | 16 | 16 | 16 |
Hard | 4 | 7 | 10 |
Takeaway: Be calm and more aware – have a look at options properly. Strong conceptual knowledge required.

XI-XII Question Distribution
Comments on the distribution of questions across Std XI and XII
Data collected from curriculum mapping
Subject | No. of Questions
XI | XII | Total | |
Physics | 13 | 17 | 30 |
Chemistry | 17 | 13 | 30 |
Maths | 18 | 12 | 30 |
Total | 48 | 42 | 90 |
Observation: More XI than XII
Takeaway: thorough prep required
Conceptual clarity of XI more required as concept application is there in XII standard.

11 | 48 | 38 | 42 | 40 | 44 |
12 | 42 | 52 | 48 | 50 | 46 |
Total | 90 | 90 | 90 | 90 | 90 |
Takeaway: If you are aspiring to aim over 200, you should give equal emphasis to both 11th and 12th class concepts.
Chapter and section (eg – mechanics, calculus) distribution (absolute and comparison with last year)
2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | |
Maths | ||||
Algebra | 7 | 10 | 5 | 8 |
Coordinate geometry | 6 | 4 | 6 | 5 |
Calculus | 10 | 10 | 11 | 10 |
Trigo | 2 | 2 | 3 | 2 |
Stat, Mathematical reasoning | 2 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
Vector and 3D | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
Observation: Similar distribution as last year. Cal >algebra> coordinate
- Concepts from sets and relations were mixed in a lot of chapters.
- Easy questions from conics and P n C were asked
- A lot of questions had concepts from 2 or 3 chapters mixed.
Takeaway: Calculus comprises one third of the paper – don’t ignore. Algebra and coordinate also form major chunks. Thorough study is required.
Difficulty distribution (absolute and comparison with last year
Physics | Chemistry | Maths
Easy | 6 | 7 | 6 |
Medium | 16 | 17 | 14 |
Hard | 8 | 6 | 10 |
JEE (Main) 2017 (according to curriculum) Data dump here
Physics | Chemistry | Maths
Easy | 9 | 7 | 4 |
Medium | 16 | 16 | 16 |
Hard | 4 | 7 | 10 |
Observation: Similar difficulty. Slightly more difficult due to length of the questions
- Easier questions from Conics Sections and Permutations and Combinations which made it easy.
- 2 – 3 concepts were mixed in each question making them lengthier.
Takeaway: Similar difficulty can be expected next year. Save more time for math and finish chemistry section faster
Physics
XI-XII Question Distribution
Subject | No. of Questions
XI | XII | Total | |
Physics | 13 | 17 | 30 |
Chemistry | 17 | 13 | 30 |
Maths | 18 | 12 | 30 |
Total | 48 | 42 | 90 |
Observation: More from XII than XI
Takeaway: Equal importance to both years
Practicals should not be ignored – easy questions on meter bridge , potentiometer were asked
Chapterwise
2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | |
Physics | ||||
Mechanics | 8 | 6 | 5 | 6 |
Electromagnetism | 9 | 8 | 7 | 9 |
Optics | 2 | 2 | 5 | 3 |
Heat, Thermodynamics and Properties of matter | 2 | 5 | 3 | 4 |
Modern Physics and Semiconductors | 6 | 6 | 5 | 4 |
Waves, SHM | 2 | 2 | 3 | 2 |
Error, Experimental Skills | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
Observation : Similar weightage
Only one question from heat and thermodynamics
Takeaway – Similar pattern can be expected and modern physics shouldn’t be ignored. Mechanics and Electromagnetism are big chunks so more questions are obviously expected
Difficulty
Difficulty distribution (absolute and comparison with last year)
Physics | Chemistry | Maths

Easy | 9 | 7 | 4 |
Medium | 16 | 16 | 16 |
Hard | 4 | 7 | 10 |
Observation: Slightly trickier. Not so many straightforward questions.
Takeaway: Read the questions properly and conceptual understanding is important
OVERALL
Chemistry was conceptual. One or two questions required lots of calculation
Maths was lengthy but non ambiguous
Physics was the trickiest, also calculative in nature
A little tougher than last year but almost similar
Set C two questions can be expected to be bonus
One Q19 – Data Missing
Q67 physics – The answer doesn’t match the given options
