The purpose of Joint Seat Allotment Authority(JoSAA) is that the admission in 97 institutes (IITs, NITs and IIITs, CFTIs) should be made through a common platform. Admission to all the academic programs offered by these Institutes will be made through JoSAA counseling. There are some important points to remember during JEE Advanced Counselling.

All those candidates who have qualified in JEE (Main) 2017 can register for seat allocation in various NITs and GFTIs and are eligible to register for seat filling-in of choices.

Choice filling process of JEE Advanced counselling
- During choice filling, log in using your User ID (Registration Number), JEE Advanced 2017 Roll Number and Password.
- Candidates are advised to fill-in their choices of Institutes and branches in decreasing order of their preference always. Candidates are strongly recommended to fill-in as many (almost all) choices as possible.
- It is advisable for all the candidates that they must “lock” their choices. If any candidate does not lock his/her choices, then his/her last saved choices will be locked automatically after the last date of locking of choices.
Note: For admission to Bechlor’s programmes like Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering and other related courses, the candidates have to fulfil the additional fitness and health parameters.
Seat allotment process of JEE Advanced counselling
JoSAA counselling includes seven rounds i.e. 1st through 7th rounds of seat allocation for academic programs offered by Institutes are under JoSAA 2017.
- To check the allotment result or the allotted seats, the candidates have to login by entering their User ID (Registration Number), JEE Advanced 2017 Roll Number and Password to check their Seat Allotment.
- Candidates allotted a seat have to pay the seat acceptance fee (through e-Challan/SBI NetBanking) and get their documents verified at any reporting centre for seat acceptance.
- The online seat allotment procedure also requires the candidates to get their original documents and their soft copy( mark-sheets 10th & 12th, category certificates for SC/ST/OBC-NCL – uploaded at the time of registration) verified. In case found unacceptable, such candidates will be considered as general only if their score in the Paper-1 of JEE Main 2017 is above the declared cutoff marks.
- Also, a candidate is required to fill option for ‘freeze’, ‘slide’ or ‘float’ the choice of academic program.
- In case of Dual reporting : If in any of the counselling round, a candidate’s allotment changes from an NIT to an IIT, then the candidate has to report again at an IIT reporting center, similarly if a candidate’s allotment from IIT changes to an NIT, the candidate has to report again at any NIT reporting center. If he/she fails to do so then his seat will be given to another candidate.
- Withdraw option: A candidate who has already accepted a seat can withdraw his/her admission by reporting at a reporting center before the last (seventh) round of seat allocation.

JEE Advanced Counselling – Seat Allotment Matrix
Seat allotment matrix is also known as seat allocation matrix is the matrix that contains the complete data about the number of seats allotted to a particular institute. It also shows the category wise seat distribution among the different branch. Note that the seats are allotted to the deserving candidates according to their ranks. The allocation of the seats are based on the category of candidate like general or reserved, position of the candidate in the rank or merit list,choices filled in the sequence of preferences given,Seat availability in different categories and quota based on the merit of the candidate and also based on the rules made by the JoSAA 2017. Every year JoSAA declare the seat allotment matrix of 119 institutes that includes all IITs NITs and ISM. IITs have total 10, 572 seats in total. Different IITs have the different number of seats alloted. IIT kharagpur has the maximum number of seats allotted counting to 1341 followed by IIT BHU with a total number of 1090 seats. Similar to this NITs also have a different number of seats. The total number of seats sum up to 17, 390 in all the NITs. The highest number of seats has been allocated to NIT, Raipur and this is followed by MANIT, Bhopal with 937 seats and NIT, Rourkela has 900 seats.
There is a JoSAA seat allotment matrix for the Indian Institute of Technology, Indian School of Mines, National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institute of Information Technology.
Among the total seats allocated to a particular NIT or IIT, seats are distributed category wise like General, OBC seats, SC/ST/PwD seats.

JoSAA Counselling-list of Participating Institutes
JoSAA counselling 2017 is being done through an online portal. Participating institutes include 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 20 IIITs and 20 GFTIs. Only JEE qualifying candidates can get admission to any one of these colleges. Candidates should know about the participating institutions and their respective last year cutoffs while filling up their choices.

Important dates and schedule for counselling
Here are the deadlines for the events related to JoSAA 2017. The JoSAA counseling was scheduled to start from June 15, 2017. The final choice list has to be locked by the candidate before June 27, 2017. The results of the first round of seat allotment were declared on June 28, 2017, and the students those who have been allotted seats were required to report at the nearby counseling centre for acceptance of the seat and document verification. Various Reporting Centers For JEE Advanced Counselling 2017
Reporting Centers are where a candidate who has been allotted seats has to mark his/her presence and participate in document verification process. After document verification, they have to visit the allotted IITs to confirm their admission. It is important to note that all the candidates who wish to appear at the reporting centers of JoSAA 2017 for document verification have to pay the seat acceptance fee of Rs. 45,000 for OC/OBC and Rs. 20,000 for SC/ST/PwD Category either through SBI e-challan or SBI Net Banking. The time and address of the allocated JoSAA 2017 reporting centers are available in the provisional seat allocation letter. List of Documents needed at the time of counselling
JoSAA has released the list of some crucial documents in its brochure. The documents required are different for IITs and NITs. The documents include the identity proof, proof of seat acceptance fee, medical certificates and many more. For seat acceptance, candidates are required to present the set of original documents along with the set of self-attested photocopies to the reporting centre. The list of document needed at the time of counseling is given below:
- Provisional seat allotment letter For IITs
- Class XII performance check [format given in Annexure 7(a) of JoSAA Business rules]
- Undertaking by the candidate [format given in Annexure 9 of JoSAA Business rules]
- Proof of seat acceptance fee payment by e-challan or internet banking of SBI [For SC/ST/PwD: Rs. 20,000/- For others: Rs. 45,000/-]
- Photo identity card [issued by govt. agency/last attended school/Class XII admit card]
- Original Admit card of JEE (ADV) 2017
- Date of birth proof [Class X marks sheet]
- Class XII (or equivalent) board marks sheet. If available, pass certificate

- Certificate for Persons with Disabilities (PWD), if applicable.
- Passport of the candidate and parents (for foreign nationals), OCI certificate or PIO card, if applicable
- DS certificate (if applicable)
- Registration-cum-locked choices for seat allotment.
- Two passport size photographs identical to the one uploaded during JEE (Main/ ADV) 2017 registration.

Q- How IIT JEE works?
Joint Entrance Examination Main(JEE Main) is the joint national examination that is conducted every year by Central Board Of Secondary Education (CBSE). Every year, more than 10 lakh candidates appear for this examination and get admission to various NITs, IIITs and other private colleges. It is important to note that JEE Main is the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Only those candidates are eligible to register for IIT-JEE advanced who have qualified the JEE Main examination and are among the top 2,20,000 candidates of JEE Main. JEE Main can be given either offline or online. From 2013 to 2016, the marks obtained in the class XII school board examination were given a 40% weightage in deciding the JEE Main All India Ranks(AIRs). But in 2017, the 12th percentage was not accounted to calculate the JEE Main rank. Earlier, counselling for JEE Main was conducted through Central Seat Allocation Board(CSAB) but now officials have made changes in the counselling procedure. The JAB (Joint Admission Board), representing IITs and CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) are organizing a common counselling for the two exams of JEE. The joint counselling committee for these exams is known as the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The admissions to various NITs and IIITs are done through JoSAA counselling.
IIT-JEE Advanced is the second stage examination of JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) through which one can get into various IITs along with some CFTIs – Central Government funded technical institutions like IISc Bangalore and IISERs of the country. Only the candidates who clear JEE Main and secure rank under 2,20,000 are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
Through JEE Advanced, IITs offer admissions to various undergraduate courses including Bachelor’s, Integrated Masters or Bachelor‐Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences, Architecture, and Pharmaceutics. There are various courses offered at IITs, some courses such as B.Tech in Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical are offered in all the institutes while other courses such as B.Tech in Biotechnology, Environment, BS Economics are restricted to few IITs. Q- How was IIT JEE 2017 paper?
IIT JEE MAIN 2017 was of easy-moderate level. Many questions were quite straight forward and could be answered by anyone who has prepared well for the exam. But a crucial role was played by some tricky questions which turned out to be the deciding factors. In every paper 5-6 questions were framed differently but there was no ambiguity in any question.
Physics was overall good, and was on the easier side. It barely had any surprise elements which in itself was surprising. Almost all the topics were covered here. Mathematics paper was of moderate level of difficulty. It had a few lengthy question and a few easy questions also. It required conceptual understanding of all the chapters and was nearer to the JEE Advanced paper. Chemistry was of moderate difficulty level. It was equally balanced with questions coming from Physical Chemistry, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. Here, the questions were again conceptual and only a few were memory based.

Q- What is IIT JEE counselling?
Before 2015, the JEE counselling was done through Joint Admission Board(JAB) and Central Seat Allocation Board(CSAB). Admissions to various IITs were made through JAB whereas CSAB is responsible for intake in various NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. After 2015, MHRD set up Joint Seat Allotment Authority(JoSAA) to manage JEE counselling. The purpose of JoSAA counselling is that admission to 97 institutes (IITs, NITs, and IIITs, CFTIs) should be made through a common platform. JEE Main 2017 counselling and seat allotment is not conducted separately but is collectively conducted through JoSAA 2017 for 31 NITs, 23 IITs and 20 GFTIs, which are the participating institutes of JEE Main 2017. Those candidates who are successfully allotted seats will have to pay the seat acceptance fee and verify their documents at the designated reporting centres. Q- What is IIT JEE Advanced?
IIT-JEE Advanced is the second stage examination of JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) through which one can get into various IITs along with some CFTIs – Central Government funded technical institutions like IISc Bangalore and IISERs of the country. Only the candidates who clear JEE Main and secure rank under 2,20,000 are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
Through JEE Advanced, IITs offer admissions to various undergraduate courses including Bachelor’s, Integrated Masters or Bachelor‐Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences, Architecture, and Pharmaceutics. There are various courses offered at IITs, some courses such as B.Tech in Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical are offered in all the institutes while other courses such as B.Tech in Biotechnology, Environment, BS Economics are restricted to few IITs. There are some new courses in Design and Aeronautics being introduced or supplemented in newer IITs such as IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Hyderabad. Also, the admission to various courses is based on the cutoff and number of seats available in an IIT which is different in different IITs. Around 10,572 undergraduate seats are filled every year through JEE Advanced.
Q- What is IIT JEE Main and Advanced?
Joint Entrance Examination Main(JEE Main) is the joint national examination that is conducted every year by Central Board Of Secondary Education (CBSE). Every year, more than 10 lakh candidates appear for this examination and get admission to various NITs, IIITs and other private colleges. It is important to note that JEE Main is the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Only those candidates are eligible to register for IIT-JEE advanced who have qualified the JEE Main examination and are among the top 2,20,000 candidates of JEE Main. JEE Main can be given either offline or online. From 2013 to 2016, the marks obtained in the class XII school board examination were given a 40% weightage in deciding the JEE Main All India Ranks(AIRs). But in 2017, the 12th percentage was not accounted to calculate the JEE Main rank. Earlier, counselling for JEE Main was conducted through Central Seat Allocation Board(CSAB) but now officials have made changes in the counselling procedure. The JAB (Joint Admission Board), representing IITs and CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) are organizing a common counselling for the two exams of JEE. The joint counselling committee for these exams is known as the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The admissions to various NITs and IIITs are done through JoSAA counselling.
